Meet Sable | The Silver Lake Dune Guide Mascot

A fox that actually lives here

Sable did not have to be invented from nothing. Red fox live along the dune edge and in the forest around Silver Lake State Park, and plenty of visitors have watched one trot past a campsite at dusk with the light going orange behind it.

His name comes from Little Sable Point Lighthouse, standing at the south end of the park's Lake Michigan shoreline. It is the landmark everyone here photographs, so it seemed like the right place to borrow a name.

The kit

Trail goggles sized for a fox's narrow brow. A bright orange whip flag mounted to his compact rover, because at Silver Lake that flag is the law and not a decoration. A fitted red flotation harness for the afternoons he spends on the water.

Rust coat, black stockings, white throat and tail tip. Behind him in the wide shots you will usually find pale golden sand, marram grass at the edges, deep blue water, and that lighthouse out on the point.

How he rides

Sable rides a low, fox-scale rover built around his natural four-legged body. Flag up, all four paws supported, inside the marked riding area, and well clear of the closed nesting ground at the north end. That is not a lecture. It is just how a place like this stays open.

He also knows the difference between the two lakes. Silver Lake for the boat, Lake Michigan for the beach, and 450 acres of open sand in between.

Every website scene now keeps Sable in one grounded cinematic world: a natural red fox, always on four paws, with equipment designed around his real shape and scale. The colorful illustrated Sable remains a separate artwork style for clothing and merchandise.
