Silver Lake State Park's ORV area is the only place east of the Mississippi River where you can legally drive an off-road vehicle on open sand dunes. Roughly 450 acres of it, sitting between Silver Lake on one side and Lake Michigan on the other.
Two things catch people out, and neither is the terrain. The permits are three separate purchases, not one, and the Recreation Passport is the one most people arrive without. And on a summer weekend you need a parking voucher before you tow, not when you get there.
This guide keeps those in one place, alongside the part most coverage skips entirely: what the sand is actually doing on the day you arrive.

BEFORE YOU GO
Cell coverage on the dunes is thin, the permits are three separate purchases, and on a summer weekend the parking voucher is decided before you leave home. Sort all of it in the driveway, not in the queue.

Mid-May through mid-September, weekends and holidays need a parking voucher. Get it before you tow.
12 to 15 PSI and four-wheel drive engaged before you enter, not once you are already buried.

Save camp before you ride. Camp Compass uses GPS satellites to show the distance and direction back, even where cell service disappears. Your marked camp stays on this phone unless you choose to share it.
