SILVER LAKE GUIDE
Rules & hours
The season, the hours that change three times a year, the sound limit, and the voucher system that decides whether you get a parking spot at all.
Season and hours
ORV season runs April 1 through October 31. Hours change three times across it, and the detail that catches people is the access cutoff: you cannot enter the ORV area in the last half hour before closing, even though the park is technically still open.
| Period | Hours | Last entry |
|---|---|---|
| April 1 to April 30 | 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 7:30 p.m. |
| May 1 to September 15 | 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. | 9:30 p.m. |
| September 16 to October 31 | 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 7:30 p.m. |
| November 1 to March 31 | Closed to ORVs | See the off-season guide |
Required on every machine
| Requirement | Detail | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| ORV licence | Covers the vehicle, and is separate from your driver licence | Every ORV |
| ORV trail permit | Covers Michigan's ORV trail and scramble area system, which includes Silver Lake | Every ORV |
| Recreation Passport | Michigan's state park entry pass, required to enter the park at all | Every vehicle entering |
| Safety flag | Rectangular, orange, standing 10 feet above the ground when mounted | Every ORV in the dunes |
| Sound limit | 94 decibels maximum, checked at the entrance | Every ORV |
| Class requirements | Seat belts, operator age, and gear vary by vehicle class | Varies, so confirm yours |
Vehicles measured above 94 decibels are restricted from the park for two full days. That is not a fine you pay and move on from, it is the weekend. If your exhaust is marginal, resolve it before you tow rather than at the check station.
The parking voucher system
On weekends and holidays from roughly mid-May through mid-September, towing an ORV in requires a parking voucher to secure a spot. The system exists to stagger arrival times so the lots do not overflow, which they otherwise comfortably would.
The practical version: if you are arriving on a summer Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, sort the voucher before you leave home. Hoping for a walk-up spot on a July Saturday is not a plan, and the homepage console computes whether today needs one.
Weekends and holidays through the core summer season, anchored around Memorial Day and Labor Day. Midweek days outside holidays generally do not. Confirm your specific dates with the park, since the window can shift.
On the sand
- No vehicles at the water's edge on either the Silver Lake or Lake Michigan side
- Pedestrians share the dunes and can cross on foot to reach the water
- The guided dune ride route is separate and is not part of the general ORV area
- Riding under the influence is illegal on sand exactly as it is on pavement
- Stay off vegetated dunes, which are what holds this landscape together at all
